What determines a good education?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 28, 2007:
I think in the U.S. too much emphasis in placed on rote memorization and not enough on basic logic and rational thinking. I also think many public schools spend too much money on frills like pools, tennis courts, theaters and track fields facilities when the money would be better spent getting higher quality teachers and basic learning needs. In a book I read recently on what it takes to become an expert, one of the findings is that people who know a lot generally read a lot. So maybe public schools should consider spending more money on up to date books instead of nonessential big ticket items like athletic fields. I think things like sports and other nonacademic subjects should be funded by the families of the children involved in those activities. At a school near us they are spending a lot of money on new athletic facilities yet the teachers don't have basic health insurance coverage. I personally think that is a very poor allocation of school resources.
